I’ve been thinking about this hole, its depth, its sanctuary in a hostile environment.

We used to live in caves, where we could be safe from storms and predators. We were close to our instincts then, our primitive natures, and used them to survive. But in evolving, we have, perhaps, lost our understanding of how acutely we still perceive threats, and how profoundly we need to feel safe.

The caves may be gone, replaced by brick and steel, plaster and beams, wiring, cameras, and more to make us feel secure. Yet, we still seek the shelter of dens, believing they will protect us, shield us from harm, unaware of the opportunistic germ that lurks within.
